“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)

The Christian walk feels isolating at times. Sometimes, it’s excruciatingly hard and the truth is, Jesus made it clear it would be. I, like most Christians, never anticipate it can get this hard. In my personal journey with God recently, I’ve been struggling with feelings of doubt and loneliness. I’ve felt God was distant these past few weeks, but I’m constantly reminded by Him that He has not gone anywhere and I’m to stand on His promises and to trust in Him despite what my circumstances or feelings may indicate.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:18 (ESV)

God, a tribune being Himself, never intends for us to be alone or to even experience feelings of loneliness. That’s why, even if people, situations, or things leave us, God promises to never part from us.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

Today, I want to acknowledge that any feelings of loneliness we experience may be there, but the lie is in believing them or believing that God isn’t. I want to share with you some promises of God that have helped me to combat this lie. I personally recite these promises when I’m feeling this way and meditate on the word that He’s given me. I’ve used these verses to study and lean on God’s word in the moments I’m strongly feeling the lie that God isn’t with me.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35-39 (ESV)

You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
Psalm 56:8 (ESV)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:15-17 (ESV)

Psalm 42 is also a good psalm to meditate on if you’re feeling loneliness, because it portrays David’s inner struggle with feelings of loneliness and separation from God.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation”
Psalm 42:5 (ESV)
