The music blasted, the people cheered, and the bell rang because the New Year 2025 had finally arrived. I celebrated the arrival of this year with a gleeful hope and joy and I blasted various gospel songs and declared that this year would be a year of new beginnings in my life. Not even short of a week after this celebration, I faced a trial. My feelings on that day ranged from anger to frustration to defeat. I asked myself, does God really care for me?

If you’re like me, there have been times on your walk with God when you’ve asked yourself this question. When you come to a crossroad as you look at God’s word and reflect it against your life. You wonder if you heard Him correctly all this time. You wonder if maybe His deliverance, His help, His love, His grace, and His might are only reserved for those He really loves and certainly, you’re not one of them. You wonder if God even cares for you. If you’re like me, you’ll quickly answer this question with a no when your negative feelings get the best of you and a yes when you sit in His presence.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit reminded me of this word when I faced the trial that occurred at the start of this year. He was reminding me that God cares for me despite what I currently see. So, what do I do when I feel He doesn’t have my back? What do I do when I wait on Him for deliverance from A and B and now also need it for C? What do I do when I walk in obedience to the wisdom and understanding He’s given me yet I still have to wait on Him to act? What do I do when I start flirting with the idea of using my own understanding and disregard His because it feels like His isn’t working?

What do we do when we feel like God doesn’t care for us? First, we have to take God at His word.

“God is not a man, that he should lie.”
Numbers 23:19 (ESV)

The bible stands on this truth; God does not lie. If we believe God lies, we believe He’s not a God of truth. If that’s the case, we are questioning the entire validity of the gospel (John 14:6). Scripture has a way of convicting us of this doubt when we feel like God doesn’t care for us or we think that He isn’t here for us. It has a way of bringing to our attention the decision of trust that is required on our walk of faith. The trust we need to have in Him to continue to follow Him. The trust we need to have in Him to continue to lean on His word. The trust we need to have in Him to continue to be secure in knowing that He holds our future in His hand. And, if He does, what are we worried for? How can we possibly think that God doesn’t care for us?

Since God’s plans are to bring His children a hope and a future then these circumstances aren’t the end. It simply can’t end here. It can’t end where we feel like God doesn’t care. It can’t end where we feel like we’re all alone in this. It can’t end here, because we’re too precious to God for it to. Do you believe this? Don’t take me at my word. Rather, trust Him at His word.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)

God constantly reminds us in His word to not be afraid. I think it’s because He knows this: righteous fear towards Him brings us in awe of Him and trusting of Him (Psalm 19:9) while unrighteous fear towards others makes us feel like He’s far away when He’s still near (Deuteronomy 31:6). Unrighteous fear will often cause us to question God’s care and authority over our lives even though our Heavenly Father tells us that He’s counted the hairs on our heads because of how precious we are to Him.

Because God cares so much for me, I ought to find comfort in knowing that even if what I see does not reflect His care, God is still working. There’s not a single circumstance I face that God isn’t working out for my good (Romans 8:28). Please find encouragement in knowing that the future God has for you cannot end in despair because He has promised us hope. Yes, God cares.

Which brings me to my second point – the comfort I need in those moments I feel that God doesn’t care won’t come from me. It won’t come from the world. It can only come from Him.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Romans 10:17 (ESV)

We’re not called to do this on our own, because we have The Helper who helps us in all of our needs (John 14). God has never called us to face any battles on our own. Not when He’s given us His Kingdom, His army, His angels, His wisdom, His grace, His mercy, and so much more (Luke 12:32). God has never called us to face our spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, and financial battles on our own. It’s so important we hold dear to this truth. God is with us, God is for us, and God cares.

Which brings me to my last point – it’s imperative in these moments of emotional distress that we renew our minds daily.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2 (ESV)

When the lies creep in, we refute them with the truth of God’s word. Our feelings will contradict the word of God at times so we renew our minds with the truth like this:

Does God really care for me?

  • Yes, because 1 Peter 5:7 tells me that I should cast all my anxieties on Him because He cares for me.
  • Yes, because He will never leave me nor forsake me according to Deuteronomy 31:6-8.
  • Psalm 139:13 tells me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, so yes, God cares for me.

When I don’t have scripture memorized, I go online and research/study verses that speak on the truth that I’m seeking. Or, I go on the YouVersion Bible App and look up verses that connect to the topic I’m searching for. What’s essential is that I seek the truth and the only living truth is found in God’s Word.

I know how hard it is to answer yes to this question when you’re going through it. I wrote these words while still facing some difficult battles that I’m waiting on deliverance from. One day, I’ll write the testimonies. I encourage us to not lose hope today when the lies creep in and to instead, seek His face and praise Him because He cares for us.

Sincerely,

Anne

Scripture to meditate on this week:

“When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.”
